My husband was giving me the squeezed look, the one that meant, Please don't make a fuss. To Peter and his friends, making a fuss was a taboo of Oedipal proportions. Only wimps and whiners and rich girls from Milwaukee made fusses. We stood on the concrete driveway of the Prairie du Sac boat landing, where I had just learned that our tent and sleeping bags were not among the brown plastic trash bags full of camping gear at our feet. I pictured a night on a sandbar with one nappy, undersized blanket between us, praying for a dry night in this summer of record-breaking rains. Making a fuss did not seem out of the question.
