How did you get into your line of work? I was working at a local restaurant and was looking for daytime work that had something to do with the water. A friend told me that the Elizabeth II was looking for tour guides. I asked if I had to wear a costume or talk with an accent, because I am no actor. All I had to do was wear a blue shirt and take people on tours of the whole site. I worked as a tour guide for about six months then started helping in maintenance of the ship and park. Before I knew it, I was working completely in the Maintenance Department for Carroll Williams. I also worked on the ship when we went sailing under Captain Bill Rea for about five years and then under Captain Horace Whitfield for another five years. I have been captain for the past six years. As of last year I also have been involved with the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum and now oversee more than 20 boats total, including the ship. My next step is to persuade everyone to call me commodore.
