When wind was the only engine driving boats, anyone coming to Smithfield had to arrive on a rising tide and depart on a falling one. Remember how the first diaries of the Jamestown settlers said they fell from London? You realize the ships were utterly dependent on tides unless they just happened to have strong wind at their backs.
